ABSTRACT
Ulcerative Lymphangitis is an infectious chronic disease of horses caused principally by Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis affecting the lymphatic vessels. A five years old West African Barb (Arewa) breed stallion was presented with ruptured nodular lesions on the skin of both right and left hemithorax. Culture and sensitivity revealed the presence of Staphylococcus aureus which was highly sensitive to penicillin and fluoroquinolone. The affected lymphatic nodules (matured and immature) together with the connecting tracts were excised using elliptical skin incisions made on the nodules and tracts. Large surgical openings were individually reduced by applying simple interrupted sutures with Nylon size 1 leaving drain for discharges on the dependent ends of the surgical openings. Surgical wounds were cleaned with dilute Chlorhexidine in first week and subsequently with Eusol® A and B mixture. Wound was dressed with Oxytetracycline wound spray (Oxytetra®, Hebei Lihua Pharmaceuticals. Co, China) until healed. Two courses of Penicillinstreptomycin (Penstrep®, Kepro B.V., Holland) 10mg/kg IM 1/52, Vitamin C 50mg/kg IV 5/7 and Tetanus toxoid 2.5mls IM stat. Severe swelling and pain around limbs were controlled with Diclofenac 2.5mg/Kg IM 2/7. Surgical excision of nodules, Penicillin-streptomycin at four days interval and Vitamin C administration aided quick recovery from the Ulcerative Lymphangitis.
