Anti-ulcer and Wound-healing Activities of the Aqueous Leaf Extract of Cissampelos owariensis P.Beauv. ex DC.

ABSTRACT
Cissampelos owariensis has been reported to be used in the treatment of diseases and conditions such as digestive problems, infertility and infections. The present study evaluated its effects on gastric ulcers and wound healing. Gastric ulcer was induced in albino rats with ethanol, indomethacin and cold stress following treatment with 50, 100 and 200 mg/kg of the aqueous extract of the leaf of C. owariensis (COLE). The free and total acidity of the gastric contents were assessed. Heat-inflicted wound was applied on the skin of albino rats and treated with the extracts for 3 weeks, measuring the reduction in wound size every 5 days. The extract acted dose-dependently and compared favourably with the reference drugs used for the three models. The extract exhibited lower gastric juice volume compared to the control (2.50 ml at 100 mg/kg as against 9.00 ml in the ethanol model). By the 20th day, 200 mg/kg of the extract achieved a mean percentage wound healing of 96%. COLE proved very plausible as an alternative remedy for ulcers and wounds.
